David is the Elders Quorum president in our church and it is an amazingly busy calling. Between meeting with all the families in the ward, meeting with his presidency, stake meetings, ward meetings, helping people move, cleaning (aka coordinating who cleans) the church, snow removal, and so many other things that I know that I am forgetting and/or don’t know about. It is what we call a full time calling in our church. David has been serving for 2 and a half years now. David came up with the idea to have a Pinewood Derby for the men in our ward. He was thinking that he would get maybe 10 people to sign up, if he was lucky. He got about 47 that actually signed up. It was a great surprise! So after months of hearing about this car that David was going to make the day finally came! I don’t even want to say how many hours and how much money actually went into making this car everything that David wanted it to be. But a few new tools and a few trial runs later the car was ready.
The day of the derby was CRAZY busy. I had a baby shower in the morning and then David wanted me to make cookie cakes for it as well as trophies for that night. We made the trophies thanks to Hobby Lobby and my amazing Silhouette! David cut out some wood for the base and then we put different wooden shapes on them and labeled them. We had 10 trophies and they turned out great! So that night we went and everyone had a great time. There were only 10 cars there that night, but a ton of families! They raced 3 at a time. David’s car won some races until the last race. He let Maggie hold the remote…did I forget to mention that David made it a remote controlled car?! So he let Maggie take control and she “accidently” pushed the button too soon and the car flew backwards off the track! It was pretty funny and everyone was so excited to see David’s car lose. He was killing most of the cars up until then. It was such a fun night and everyone there said we should make this an annual thing. Next year we will at least know what is coming!
For those interested David made his car out of the derby car, parts from a remote controlled car, a mouse trap and a plastic ice cream box. He set it up so that he could use a remote control to push it off with a mouse trap if he wasn’t winning and it would speed up his car quite a bit. It was pretty neat! He did a great job with it. If was fun to see everyone’s different ideas for them. Very fun project for those boys at heart!
